When Whiskers wonders why everyone dresses in costumes, carves pumpkins, and shares treats on Halloween, Grandpa Magic tells him a story from long ago—when autumn was seen as a sad time because summer was ending and winter was near. But one little Grimmet saw the season differently. He saw brilliant red and golden leaves dancing through the sky, cool breezes, pumpkins, moonlit evenings, and something worth celebrating.
His idea brings the Magic Forest together for The Last Lantern Night. Everyone dresses as something they aren't—not to frighten each other, but to use their imaginations. When the dark forest paths need light, they carve happy and silly faces into pumpkins and place tiny lights inside, filling the forest with a beautiful trail of glowing lanterns. Friends bring delicious treats, but instead of keeping them, they discover that giving and sharing makes the celebration even more special. Before receiving a treat, everyone gives one away.
Year after year, the tradition continues until The Last Lantern Night becomes what the Magic Forest now calls Halloween.
Rather than focusing on frightening imagery, The First Halloween introduces young children to Halloween through imagination, friendship, kindness, sharing, creativity, and the beauty of autumn. Costumes become make-believe, glowing pumpkins become welcoming lights, and treats become an opportunity to give to others.
It reminds children that Halloween doesn't have to be scary to be magical. At its heart, it can simply be a night for friends and families to laugh, imagine, share, and celebrate together.
